Plastics are various complex organic compounds or hydrocarbons (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, chlorine, and sulfur) created through a process called polymerization. The plastic ingredient or resin is capable of being molded, injected, extruded, or cast into various shapes and forms, or even stretched into filaments where they're used as textile fibers.
Plastics manufacturing begins by heating the hydrocarbons in a process known as cracking where larger molecules are broken down into smaller ones. These monomers are then chemically bonded into chains called polymers to create plastic resins with different properties and characteristics. Each type of resin created can be used in different applications and products. The variability of composition of these resins permits the production of a compound that can be tailored for a specific design or performance requirement such chemical resistance, durability, flexibility, rigidity, flame resistance, heat resistance, and strength.
The type of polymers used in the plastic injection molding process determines its suitability for a product application. The design of the mold and type of plastic used then, can be done in many different ways allowing for a variety of valuable characteristics that product designers require.
Thermoplastic Injection Molding
A Thermoplastic is a polymer composition held together by weak secondary bonding forces that soften when heated and which return to its original condition when cooled. Thermoplastics softened by heat can be shaped by extrusion, molding or pressing.
Some examples of Thermoplastic injection molding are electrical insulation, beverage bottles, syringes, packaging film wrap, carpet fibers, automotive bumpers, kitchen food containers, sheathing for electrical cables, floor and wall coverings, house siding, credit cards and instrumentation panels and components for aircraft and automobiles.
